Small business advice personalized for those who are new to business

Why should Business Owners Prioritize Vacations?

Taking a vacation away from work is good for your soul, mind, and body. The change in pace and environment can stir creative thoughts that can push your business forward when you return. The break will allow your mind to rest and reset. And your body will appreciate the additional sleep that vacation can provide. No one was made to work 24/7. Even robots get powered down for maintenance once and awhile.

Here are 5 reasons why you should plan to take a vacation.

1)  This is why you started a business

Many of us started our businesses so that we could have more life balance and take more vacation. So...if that’s why you started your business and you’re not taking vacation, you’re missing out on a key detail!

2) You work too much

As a small business owner, you’re already wearing 15 different hats, and chances are that you’re working way too much anyway. It’s time for you to take a break.

3) Vacations spur creativity

Changing things up is a great way to get inspired. Get outside of your routine, out of your house, and outside of your normal to shake up your creative juices. Who knows, you might even get your best business idea while on vacation.

4) It’s good for your health

Stress is killing us. There’s numerous studies that show that we are too stressed and working far too much. The good news is that vacationing is great for your health. In the short term, you can catch up on that much needed sleep. In the long term, you can improve your overall health. For example, according to an article published by the New York Times, taking a vacation every two years (as opposed to every six) will lessen your risk for heart attack.

5) Be a good role model

Chances are that you already knew the last four points. You probably even know that taking vacation is good for people and you encourage others to take vacation. If you have employees, you know you’ll have happier and healthier employees if they take their vacation time. It’s hard for small business employees to feel encouraged to take their vacation time if their boss (aka you) never takes their vacation time! And if you have children, you want to set a good example for them to have a life that’s balanced with hard work and rest. Plus, they might enjoy spending some time with you!

Go have fun!

Time to follow through on all your plans and hard work and go have fun. Enjoy time away, by yourself, or with people you love. Remember this is why you started your small business, so you could have more of this, so go enjoy it.
